Wayfarer is a way of life for Mary Kenson, whose parent’s founded the camp in 1991. After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2011 and working for American Ballet Theatre in NYC, Mary Kenson returned to the family business to work full-time as Program Director. Each year has brought new responsibilities and opportunities, and an ever-deepening knowledge of the many different aspects of camp business.
Now, taking on the role of Director of Girls’ and Boys’ Camps, Mary Kenson oversees the well-being of the staff while ensuring each camper has an incredible summer filled with self-growth, fun and adventure. In the off-season she can be found visiting Wayfarer families, finding outstanding counselors, and keeping in touch with camp alumni.
Mary Kenson and her husband, Bennett Lewis (former camper and counselor), spend much of the non-summer months at their home in Saluda, NC and Nashville, TN, where Bennett’s professional career in the music industry is based.
Contact Mary KensonCharlotte knew Camp Wayfarer would always be part of her life since her first time as a camper in 2001. Fast-forward 20 years, she still packs her bags to head to camp each and every summer. As Director, Charlotte oversees staff and campers, ensuring each session goes smoothly for both campers and staff. She creates and manages the daily operations of camp, cabin-life, and off-campus trips.
Before becoming a full-time employee at Camp Wayfarer, Charlotte graduated from Clemson University in 2015, where she majored in education. She spent seven years as a kindergarten teacher at Grove Elementary in Greenville, SC. She has always been passionate about inclusion and ensuring each child feels confident in themselves, their friendships and future.
Her new role as Camp Director takes her to Charleston, SC, where she now resides during camp off-season. Between being with family and exploring the beaches and restaurants, she’ll spend her weeks traveling to meet potential staff members, campers and their families. She looks forward to helping make each summer as special for new campers as it was for her.
Contact CharlotteStella found her way to Wayfarer after her freshman year at Sewanee. Although she had not grown up at camp, it quickly became her second home. She spent two summers working as a counselor. After graduating from Sewanee in 2022 and spending a year working in politics in Washington D.C., she made her way back to Wayfarer to work full-time as Director of Girl’s Camp.
In her new role, Stella is out and about in camp, ensuring that campers are having fun while gaining lifelong skills in their program areas. She also works closely with girls’ camp staff, making sure their needs are met and they live the Wayfarer Way.
For the off-season, Stella’s home base is Nashville, TN – where she will be between visits with the Wayfarer family and potential new campers and counselors. She is excited to get out on the road and see everyone, and hopes to show new campers and counselors why Wayfarer is so special to her.
Contact StellaThe ideal session for younger, first-time campers! This one-week session falls at the beginning of all our camp sessions. This overlap can be helpful for families in which older siblings desire a longer session. During this “starter” camp, children go to 5 activity periods specific to their age group. Campers may attend Adventure Camp for one year only, as they get a feel for life at camp without the longer stay.
